My two nieces started their periods around the same time a few years ago and they seemed mildly horrified, annoyed and embarrassed at the idea of having to deal with this for the next 35+ years. They also however felt joy at becoming an adult! I wanted to do something deep and meaningful but was so unprepared and the moment passed…

Then I remembered a story I had been told which completely blew my mind! About periods and their place in history and culture..there was definitely something more to this strange regular bloody phenomenon than meets the eye or mooncup… so I wanted to share it with my nieces and now with you.

Currently 50% of the world’s population still face violence, abuse, mental illness and neglect as well as a lack of education and access to basic health needs because of an inescapable biological fact; their period.
Over 1.2 billion women across the world do not have access to basic sanitation, making their periods a monumental challenge every month. Further to this, 71% of women worldwide do not understand what menstruation is or when their period starts.
This lack of education and access to basic health care has life-long intergenerational effects condemning women & menstruators and their children and families to lower standards in life.
Why is this still happening? It is completely unacceptable in the 21st Century, so......

We have designed a new gift box for young people starting their first period. This contains beautifully curated products and vital information supporting you or your loved one's entry into adulthood.
There are many products out there on the market however our one is different.
It is called the Red Thread Club and our aim is to unravel the mysteries and inequalities that still exists around this natural occurrence. We will unpick this horror show and end the punishment meted out on innocent girls & menstruators for having a bleeding body.
By using my background in Anthropology and Art Psychotherapy we tell the real story to flip this outdated narrative on its head to prove that the so-called shame around our periods was actually a source of strength for us, which we can very easily reclaim.
The main focus of the gift box is a comic book where the story that re-establishes the importance of menstruation is told using an evolutionary sciences, fairy tales and myths

You can watch, read or listen as we reveal that far from being embarrassing, what us girls do and have been doing, every month for thousands upon thousands of years, 'when the painters are in', is to create human-kind.
